Friday movie review poetry
Jun. 20th, 2008 06:50 pmJust when I feared that the summer was going to produce no movies worthy of truly scathing reviews, Michael Myer's "The Love Guru" comes through for me.
It rates this from Slate:
"There are good movies. There are bad movies. There are movies so bad they're good (though, strangely, not the reverse). And once in a while there is a movie so bad that it takes you to a place beyond good and evil and abandons you there, shivering and alone."
The reviewer also calls the movie "the most joy-draining 88 minutes I've ever spent outside a hospital waiting room."
There's a blurb that's not likely to go into the ads. :-)

The New York Times goes a little higher brow, but no less negative:
"To say that the movie is not funny is merely to affirm the obvious. The word “unfunny” surely applies to Mr. Myers’s obnoxious attempts to find mirth in physical and cultural differences but does not quite capture the strenuous unpleasantness of his performance. No, “The Love Guru” is downright antifunny, an experience that makes you wonder if you will ever laugh again."

Roger Ebert slams the movie in his own singular style:
"[T]his film could have been written on toilet walls by callow adolescents.

But, Ebert's review lacks the sheer venom of Slate's and the NYT's -- and lacks the panache of Ebert's heyday of slamming horrid movies. It's almost as if this movie is so bad it's not worth his finest writing.
Finally, neglect not the wealth of snark to be found on Rotten Tomatoes:
