A plane flying out of LaGuardia airport struck one or more Canada geese, which caused severe engine damage.  They were trying to get to NJ for an emergency landing, but were forced to ditch into the Hudson River.  Everyone survived due to heroic rescue efforts.  The pilots and crew did one heck of a job bringing the plane down safely, and police and Port Authority ferry boats were there almost instantly.  All of the survivors are being treated for exposure, but that's to be expected from plunging into icy water on a day where the high temperature never got above freezing.

The NY Times link has better pictures than CNN, ones that give you a sense of where the plane is and how much water the passengers were in.

This was on the TVs on the trading floor, of course.

My favorite part was the laughter from half a dozen of us when a "commontater" was wondering aloud why they didn't open a forward door.

When the other doors were all underwater.

Yeah.

According to the people at work, the only reason (and yes they said this) the plane went down safely was due to God. "No person could have done that, God did it."

That's pretty insulting to the pilots and crew who pulled this off. God's help or inspiration to do the best they could, I'll buy that. But taking the humans out of the equation makes me uneasy.

Agreed. Although, I'm no longer stunned when I hear this sort of stuff here any more. It's a pretty common occurence. X happened, Jesus made it so.

Today's topic of Holy Fervor was that the Rapture is coming in the next 3 years as evidenced by "that stuff happening in Gaza" and "Pat Roberts". *sigh*
