Mar. 10th, 2009 04:05 pmI'm day-tripping to All Things Scribal on Saturday to teach a class:
Heraldry for Scribes -- Mistress Alys Mackyntoich, Elmet Herald
Heraldry for Scribes -- Mistress Alys Mackyntoich, Elmet Herald
What difference does it make whether the scribe writes "award him arms" or "grant him arms" on a scroll? What are "letters patent" anyway? And what are all of these funny words used to describe someone’s arms? This class answers those questions and more. Mistress Alys will provide a brief primer on how to read the language of blazon, explain where to find pictures of award badges and some of the best sources for heraldic art, and discuss the essential bits of Society protocol that are relevant to a scribe’s work. In addition, Mistress Alys will talk about the practicalities of managing scrolls in courts and how scribes can help make courts run faster, smoother, and on time.

Date: 2009-03-10 08:18 pm (UTC)Why does every heralds office need a unique name that is only understandable to other heralds?
Seriously, its something about this game of ours that completely baffles me.

Date: 2009-03-10 09:29 pm (UTC)In period, Heralds had 3 sorts of titles: King of Arms, Herald, Pursuivant.
The jobs they aspired to, had names. Like Garter Herald, or something like that.
SCA Heralds are merely creating something like period practices, when they give offices permanent titles. Not just some random Pursuivant, but Golden Gryphon Pursuivant... for example.

Date: 2009-03-10 08:35 pm (UTC)Yes I could.
Since I just finished some really neato voice lessons, I'm better than ever, and more ready to teach projection without pain.
The hard part is not getting me to be willing, but getting me THERE.

Will you be teaching this again sometime?
