I'm day-tripping to All Things Scribal on Saturday to teach a class:

Heraldry for Scribes -- Mistress Alys Mackyntoich, Elmet Herald

What difference does it make whether the scribe writes "award him arms" or "grant him arms" on a scroll? What are "letters patent" anyway? And what are all of these funny words used to describe someone’s arms? This class answers those questions and more. Mistress Alys will provide a brief primer on how to read the language of blazon, explain where to find pictures of award badges and some of the best sources for heraldic art, and discuss the essential bits of Society protocol that are relevant to a scribe’s work. In addition, Mistress Alys will talk about the practicalities of managing scrolls in courts and how scribes can help make courts run faster, smoother, and on time.

I am traveling with the lovely Vicereinne and some Ostgardrians so my plans are not entirely my own.

Why does every heralds office need a unique name that is only understandable to other heralds?

Seriously, its something about this game of ours that completely baffles me.

I'd tell you, but first I'd have to teach you the secret language of Heraldry. :-)

(Every cult has its own "secrets" that mark the difference between insiders and outsiders.)

OOPS, sorry, i just blew it... sorry as a new herald I've not been taught what's secret and what's not... :)

Short form:

1. Anything that makes you feel superior: is a secret.
2. Anything that makes you apologize for the SCA College of Arms: a secret
3. Anything that involves paralyzed and bastardized old French: secret
4. Sniggering when someone says "can't" with a Boston accent: the reason's a secret.
5. The fact that Da'ud is a hoopy frood: total secret
6. Points of Difference: TOP SECRET
7. Thinking that "ballsinger" better not be an aptonym: just a good joke.

it was just 'splained to me that the Elmet Herald is the Herald in charge of teaching new scribes the ropes of Heraldry / O.P. etc...

Not just teaching new scribes, but of teaching new heralds and the populace too. I'm the "Heraldic Education Deputy" which sounds less cool than Elmet Herald.

Elmet Herald is Brigantia's "Education Deputy", in charge of creating learning opportunities for both heralds of all levels and the populace on matters heraldic. Not single-handedly training the entire kingdom, but finding out what's needed education-wise and where, and making that happen.

The herald name thing is a vague attempt to recreate period practices which, as usual, doesn't quite work out as planned. I put the title in because it's new and shiny and because the EK website hasn't gotten itself updated to reflect that people should be bothering me with questions and not my predecessor.

Serious answer...

In period, Heralds had 3 sorts of titles: King of Arms, Herald, Pursuivant.

The jobs they aspired to, had names. Like Garter Herald, or something like that.

SCA Heralds are merely creating something like period practices, when they give offices permanent titles. Not just some random Pursuivant, but Golden Gryphon Pursuivant... for example.

If Mistress Alys loves me (and I bet she does), she'll remember to say things like "In the SCA we say there is a difference between Patent, Grant and Award - in period, there was not".

Perhaps she'll do it, even if she doesn't love me. :-)

From: [identity profile] lumineaux.livejournal.com
I wasn't going to get into SCA practices vs. period practices because I only have an hour in which to talk, but just for you I'll do that little one. ;-)

Your class: your decision.

I like to teach a little history, when I teach SCA stuff. Even if I just say "we do X: but it isn't period".

From: [identity profile] lady-jade-01.livejournal.com
She did. And she sorta described SCA vs period for a few moments, enough for those of us still new (enough) to the game to get the difference.

Of course, if the wise and sage Master Tibor would like to teach a class on period rankings and practices and where the SCA differs, I would be happy to arrange a forum for such a thing. Or perhaps a class on SCA protocol? Or voice heraldry? I will rope you into such a thing. Oh yes. I will.

From: [identity profile] goldsquare.livejournal.com
Let me assure you, that I would be SO FREAKIN' DELIGHTED to be at an event, I could be roped into almost anything.

Yes I could.

Since I just finished some really neato voice lessons, I'm better than ever, and more ready to teach projection without pain.

The hard part is not getting me to be willing, but getting me THERE.

I think I'm going to need a voice coach sometime soon -- to teach me how to deal with the sequelae of bilateral Bell's Palsy. Do you have a recommendation?

*grumble* People who schedule all the good events on the same day need to be shot!

I'm teaching a class at Hrim Schola so I can't go to the Scribal bash. Unless between now and Saturday I either manage to build a time machine or clone myself.

Will you be teaching this again sometime?
