During last night's bout of insomnia, I started and finished:

53. The Black Tower by Louis Bayard

I found this one for $5.98 in the discount section of Barnes and Noble and figured why the heck not.  It was a surprisingly entertaining mystery set in 1818 France with an idiosyncratic detective and a callow young almost doctor trying to unlock the secrets surrounding multiple murders and young man who may or may not be the lost son of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI.  The detective, Vidocq, is a great character - I'd read another novel featuring him (if such a thing exists).

How about that -- hopping over to Barnes and Noble's web site to see if Bayard has written other Vidocq novels, it turns out that Eugène François Vidocq (1757-1856) was an actual historical person.  http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Black-Tower/Louis-Bayard/e/9780641982224/?itm=1#TABS

I may pick up one of Bayard's other books, maybe the one featuring a young Edgar Allan Poe.  Here's to random foraging in the discount section!
