And you all know what that means . . . .

The rules of [livejournal.com profile] lumineaux 's annual Name That Christmas Tune are as follows: No Googling unless 24 hours has passed without a correct answer. I want the full name of the song. Credit will be given for songs with many alternate names. I'll try to hold off identifying the correct answer to give many people a chance to play.

Now here we go . . . .

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;

Since the cat is now well and out of the bag, it's "Angels We Have Heard On High"

My favorite!

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing in the night
And the mountains in reply, echoing their great delight.

Ah, I have very fond memories of singing this in children's choir at church. Nothing like a halo made out of that golden metalicy stuff (I absolutely cannot think of what it's called) and being able to shout "ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH" at the top of your lungs. Great song.

I'll be doing Name That Christmas Tune every day between now and Christmas Eve, so please play along.

While I'm home, recovering from surgery and bored, this plus heraldic commenting is what passes for "action" at my house. ;-)

oooh, that's a different verse wording than I learned :) I learned it as "sweetly singing o'er the plains..." and "echoing their joyous strains"

:D

And it has one of the spiffiest tenor lines in all all Carol-dom, says the female tenor (it's a half-line-behind echo of the cascades on the oooo's in the chorus. So much fun to sing.)

If that's the same harmony line I think it is, yes, it's a hoot.

Can anyone point to a good version I can listen to? The Jew here doesn't have a clue what you're all so excited about.

LT likes to call me the Jew who knows and loves the Christmas Carols. Years of choir and a music minor will do that to you

My mom actually likes them, too, and she's quite Jewish, and most definitely can not sing. My father has a (mostly) irrational hatred of all things Christmas, though, so she only listens to them if no one else is around.
