I'm almost ashamed that I bought this given how utterly lacking (pun somewhat intended) Lackey's recent work has been, but I had this really old gift card that was about to expire and there really was nothing more interesting on the shelves. I was expecting "Mists of Avalon Lite" and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It manages to be a story unto itself despite hitting most of the requisite "modern Arthurian" check boxes. Feisty female protagonist: check. Pseudo-Welsh language names: check. Lancelot as sympathetic and Arthur as ineffective: check. At least some conflict between the "Old Faith" and Christianity: check (although this seems to be more of an afterthought than a plot).
Not that it's a great read, by any stretch of the imagination. It's adequate amusement for sitting in a doctor's waiting room. Lackey sets up plot threads that go nowhere and continues to be without any feel for the motivation of bad guys. The primary female villain is bad just 'cause she's born that way, apparently.
Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb (yes, it's a new one)
This series is like salt and vinegar potato chips. Either you love it or you hate it. And never the twain shall meet. I happen to like it although I recognize its complete lack of nutritional value. Dallas is still stalwart. Her friends are still quirky. Roarke is still really rich and way sexy. The mystery gets the job done and there's a happy ending.
