Gwenhwyfar by Mercedes Lackey
I'm almost ashamed that I bought this given how utterly lacking (pun somewhat intended) Lackey's recent work has been, but I had this really old gift card that was about to expire and there really was nothing more interesting on the shelves. I was expecting "Mists of Avalon Lite" and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It manages to be a story unto itself despite hitting most of the requisite "modern Arthurian" check boxes. Feisty female protagonist: check. Pseudo-Welsh language names: check. Lancelot as sympathetic and Arthur as ineffective: check. At least some conflict between the "Old Faith" and Christianity: check (although this seems to be more of an afterthought than a plot).

Not that it's a great read, by any stretch of the imagination. It's adequate amusement for sitting in a doctor's waiting room. Lackey sets up plot threads that go nowhere and continues to be without any feel for the motivation of bad guys. The primary female villain is bad just 'cause she's born that way, apparently.

Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb (yes, it's a new one)
This series is like salt and vinegar potato chips. Either you love it or you hate it. And never the twain shall meet. I happen to like it although I recognize its complete lack of nutritional value. Dallas is still stalwart. Her friends are still quirky. Roarke is still really rich and way sexy. The mystery gets the job done and there's a happy ending.

You know, I went to B&N today with a gift card, too. And looked quite seriously at the Gwenhwyfar book. I didn't get it. Given your rather lukewarm review, I'm kinda glad I didn't.

Instead, I bought 2 other things that look weird but possibly interesting. Further bulletins as events warrant.

I'll happily lend it to you if you like. But don't spend money on it, no.

How do you feel about rev-war era fantasy? I may be able to send a trilogy home with Gracie after I've finished.

The American Revolutionary War is not a historical period that excites me all that much. Growing up amid too much of it, I think.

ah well, figured I'd offer ... you're not getting to see the ww2 fantasy (were-foxes and devonshire pixies?) until after I've finished it.

maybe Rhi and I could do a "multiple" lend of the book - once she finishes I could borrow it - sounds like one that would keep my interest up.
