Although really, rather than poetry, I think this one would make a great title for a noir crime novel:

“Shutter Island” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Blood, swearing, cigarettes.

Tell me you wouldn't buy "Blood, Swearing and Cigarettes" by Dashiell Hammet?  Or go see a movie by that name starring Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyk?

LOL.

I want to add Bette Davis, but it could be overkill.

Well, if we add Bette Davis, we also need Joseph Cotton or Edward G. Robinson. ;-)

Wasn't that several episodes of "Mike Hammer" ?

It aptly describes Ulric preparing the pig roast at our wedding.

Excellent title... now if only we could find some actors who are still alive, it'd be easier to make, and there'd be no dealing with exhumation hearings...

OK, so who would you cast in a modern noir named "Blood, Swearing and Cigarettes"?

Bad brain day today. I'm not ignoring this challenge :-)
Question, though... are we going novo-retro, where I'd have to stick with an all white cast?

Oh no, that would be dull.

Then even on a bad day, I'd like Taye Diggs as the P.I.
When I saw him in "Chicago", I started writing a screenplay with him as a crime-solving speakeasy piano player. That stalled when I realized I don't know jack about being black in the 1920s. Still, I have this image of him as a really cool hard-boiled P.I. I was going to use period slang for detective, but hard-boiled dick... ow, ow, ow...
Other casting forthcoming.

Let's see now...
Using The Maltese Falcon as a pseudo-reference:
Taye Diggs as Sam Spade... may have to change that name ;-)
Sarah Shahi as the Sassy Secretary
KZ Jones as the seductive Femme Fatale (Morena Baccarin, youthful alt.)
Mos Def as Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre)
I would love to see George Clooney put on a few pounds to play a Sydney Greenstreet-ish character... nowhere near that actual weight, though. I think his portrayal of civility and dignity mixed with felony would be spot-on.
Ron Livingston as the meddling cop with a perpetual 5:00 shadow.
Any other significant characters?

You know, one of my favorite episodes of Deep Space 9 is the one where they are characters in the 1940s. Frankly, I wouldn't mind using that entire cast for this movie.

Jennifer Connolly needs to be cast in a noir. If you don't believe me, watch The Rocketeer. Or Dark City (I think that's her)

You missed the most obvious actor for Sydney Greenstreet type, though: Peter Jurasik

I absolutely agree on Ron Livingston. I saw Band of Brothers before I ever saw Office Space, and I don't think he gets enough drama cred.

George Clooney needs to find a smart, worthy leading lady, a couple of incredible screenwriters, and do a modern version of the Thin Man movies.

You could set it in Paris, where being black in the 20s was cool and exotic. Or do a lot of research.

If you get the chance, watch "Defying Gravity". Ron Livingston is the lead male. Good show, well written, technically superb to the point that they actually got a real deep-dive hard suit for the Venus excursion suit prop! ABC canceled it after airing 9/13 episodes, of course.
I cracked up: Peter Jurasik was my first pick!
Jennifer Connolly was, indeed in Dark City. I was trying, last night, to think of where she'd fit in. Going with the Maltese Falcon meme, I think she'd be good as the dead partner's wife, but I'd want to expand the role, so it's worth something.

As to the other project, it has a deep anti bigotry theme, so cool and black would make a lot of work for me... It uses the '20s black v. Irish animosity. It's actually a mature project, and if I ever have the means, I'll hire "real" screenwriters who will do it justice. As it is, right now I'm writing a story with this horrible character that I hate so much, I've turned to my favorite writers' forum as a support group!
