Let's do some men's names now:

Gomez, as a first name rather than a surname, like Gomez Addams  ;-)

Jesse

Hamish

Hercules

Damian

Edited to add:  I am fascinated by people's guesses and would love to know what makes someone who is not a book herald feel like a name is period.

Guessing as I have no knowledge

No on Gomez (as first name), Jesse and Hercules.
Yes on Hamish and Damian.

I like this game. I have been learning a lot.

No on Gomez and Jesse.
Yes on Hamish

Not sure on Damian and Hercules. I would assume yes, for Damian due to the existence of "Damianna", however, I can't say for sure.

Given the several uses of "Ercole" among the Gonzaga of Mantua in the 16th Century, I'd have to say Hercules would be period used in the same context - late Renaissance Italy; whether it would be appropriate in a wider context I don't know.

Jesse is certainly biblical, and I bet sufficient research would have turned up one or two period uses - though I'd bet its wider use is post-period among Protestant circles.

Gomez and Damian I have no clue on, and I'm tempted to say post-period on Hamish, the movie Braveheart aside - but I'm not certain.

Not even the Kings of Northshield and the East will accept Braveheart as documentation. ;-)

Oh, and because I didn't believe it, I checked and Hercules is a fine French prenom.

I'll try!

Gomez - yes
Jesse- Biblical, so yes.
Hercules - I'm more familiar with the French Hercule, but I would guess yes. The popularity of Greek legends and writing in the Renaissance would seem to indicate that Greek names took on a new popularity then.
Damian - probably not
Hamish - no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was another Victorian invention.

Gomez: Didn't Columbus mention a sailor named Gomez on one of his ships? Period.

Jesse: Biblical

Hamish: I say no. Too obviously Victorian.

Hercules: I'm with the people that say used in Italy...

Damian: I know there is a form of it that is period in Greek. I'm saying yes, period - there is a saint, too, isn't there?

Gomez - not sure, gonna say no

Jesse - He's in the bible, it is period.

Hamish - Scots variation on Seumas, ie Jacob. So probably, not sure when it first shows up in records.

Hercules - latinized Heracles. Most certainly period.

Damian - Greek and also period.

I think Jesse is period. Isn't in the Bible?

Hercules -- not the way we say/spell it, although there might be a period Greek verison.

Damian and Hamish, probably a variant.

Gomez? probably not.

Hamish - no

Hercules - yes

Damian - yes - there was a Saint Damian, wasn't there?
