Period or Not, part 2
Feb. 24th, 2010 08:49 pmLet's do some men's names now:
Gomez, as a first name rather than a surname, like Gomez Addams ;-)
Jesse
Hamish
Hercules
Damian
Edited to add: I am fascinated by people's guesses and would love to know what makes someone who is not a book herald feel like a name is period.

Not sure on Damian and Hercules. I would assume yes, for Damian due to the existence of "Damianna", however, I can't say for sure.

Date: 2010-02-25 05:21 am (UTC)Jesse is certainly biblical, and I bet sufficient research would have turned up one or two period uses - though I'd bet its wider use is post-period among Protestant circles.
Gomez and Damian I have no clue on, and I'm tempted to say post-period on Hamish, the movie Braveheart aside - but I'm not certain.

Date: 2010-02-25 11:57 am (UTC)Gomez - yes
Jesse- Biblical, so yes.
Hercules - I'm more familiar with the French Hercule, but I would guess yes. The popularity of Greek legends and writing in the Renaissance would seem to indicate that Greek names took on a new popularity then.
Damian - probably not
Hamish - no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was another Victorian invention.

Date: 2010-02-25 12:23 pm (UTC)Jesse: Biblical
Hamish: I say no. Too obviously Victorian.
Hercules: I'm with the people that say used in Italy...
Damian: I know there is a form of it that is period in Greek. I'm saying yes, period - there is a saint, too, isn't there?

Date: 2010-02-25 02:46 pm (UTC)Jesse - He's in the bible, it is period.
Hamish - Scots variation on Seumas, ie Jacob. So probably, not sure when it first shows up in records.
Hercules - latinized Heracles. Most certainly period.
Damian - Greek and also period.

Date: 2010-02-25 02:56 pm (UTC)Hercules -- not the way we say/spell it, although there might be a period Greek verison.
Damian and Hamish, probably a variant.
Gomez? probably not.
