Mar. 6th, 2010 07:50 amFionnabhair - Not Period. No documentation was provided, and none could be found, that the feminine given name Fionnabhair was used outside of legend. Lacking evidence that it was used by humans in period, it is not registerable. [Fionnabhair inghean Thighearnaigh, 06/2003 LoAR, R-Caid] This was reaffirmed within the past year. HOWEVER, there are similar-sounding masculine names if one of your submitters is dead set on this name (and I’ve got me one of those, oh boy). See the Nov. 2009 LoAR Fionnbharr le Nedlere A-Ansteorra (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2009/11/09-11lar.html)
Wilhelmina – Not Period. This feminine form did not arise until the 18th or 19th century. The period feminine of Wilhelm appears to have been Wilhelma. [Wilhelma von Ravensburg, LoAR 07/2004, Æthelmearc-A] (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2004/07/04-07lar.html)
Argentina – Period. Found in “Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames” by Brian Scott (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/reaneyAG.html)
Beatrix – Period. Found in “Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames” by Brian Scott (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/reaneyAG.html). This spelling remained popular throughout the SCA period.
Modesty – Period. In addition to being a “virtue name” so popular among the 16th century (and later) Protestants, it’s found in “Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames” by Brian Scott (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/reaneyHZ.html), dated to 1296
