Eleanor's Laurel Scroll
Mar. 6th, 2010 09:40 pmAlthough I couldn't be there in person, I did send some handy words that a clever person put into a scroll:
Konrad Rex et Brenwen Regina, to all people to whom these presents come, greetings. Wherefore, the memories of men being imperfect, the business of this our solemn court requires the preparation of written documents by which our Royal Will is memorialized, displayed and recorded for our present subjects and all future generations; and wherefore by the most ancient traditions of this our Eastern Realm, the art of inking said documents is deemed a praiseworthy and notable endeavor such that excellence therein has been and forever shall be rewarded by such signs and honors as are within the power of the Crown to bestow; and wherefore our subject Eleanor Catlyng has shown herself to be among those whose excellence in the matters of pen and ink has achieved lofty and unmatched heights, and further has proven herself to be possessed of such honors and virtues as befit a Peer of the Realm, such that our ancestors Thorvald and Svava of blessed memory did previously elevate her to that estate; and Wherefore, We have taken counsel from such Peers and other persons of good character concerning the further disposition of the said Eleanor,
THEREFORE, of our especial grace, certain science and mere motion, we have given and granted, and by these presents for us, our heirs and successors, do give and grant to the said Eleanor the right to possess, bear and display the sign and insignia of the Order of the Laurel, and do further instruct the said Order to accept the said Eleanor as a member with all rights appertaining thereupon.
And more, we will and command all and singular justices of the peace, mayors, sheriffs, bailiffs, constables and other our officers, ministers and faithful subjects, to be abiding, helping and assisting in the due execution hereof, as they tender our pleasure, and will answer to the contrary at their utmost perils. We will and grant that these our letters patent shall be a sufficient warrant and discharge against us, our heirs and successors, and all or every other person or persons whatsoever they be. Done in the Barony of Carolingia, the 6th day of March A.S. XLIV. Per ipsam Reginam.
I seem to have misplaced my notes identifying the source text. I know that it's 16th century or late 15th at the earliest, but that's the best I've got right now.

Date: 2010-03-10 07:38 pm (UTC)There have been a lot of cases of "nobody at all" to "secretary" during the current reign, and unfortunately, sometimes the Royalty just forgets to tell us altogether. :/
The only one I knew of in advance was Briony, just days to a week before it happened, and Nest, because I was working on her scroll. I don't recall if hers was announced to the Order or not.
