I am not surprised that all of the species in the genus Canis can interbreed.  Dogs and their kinfolks are the ultimate opportunists.

Don't know why they were surprised to find domestic dog DNA. When I lived in Vermont, it was tacitly assumed that if you heard/saw coyotes they were more likely 'coydogs' than purebred coyotes. Here in southern NE, where most people neuter their dogs, a coyote is probably all coyote.

I don't hear it too often these days, but I always enjoy listening to coyotes 'sing'.
