When I went to consult for my SCA name, I mentioned that my online name was Hugh Mannity, which was one of the reasons I wanted Hugh for my SCA name. The consulting herald wanted to see if he could document "Mannity" as a surname...

I resisted the impulse.

When he was about 8 my son (he's now 21) said he wanted a manatee as a pet. So I asked him what he'd call it and he said "Hugh". Then I asked him where he'd keep it, he said in the bath.

But the Hugh Mannity/Humanity/Huge Manatee thing amused me immensely.

But I was going more for the humanity pun.

It's actually Scrooby Doo. And I did, in fact, research the paint job on the Mystery Machine when designing the arms. The field of Scrooby's arms is slightly off from the original Mystery Machine design, but still recognizable, I think.

It's not really too late. You could have an alternate persona ;-)

I really need to register a name. Soon. Sadly Hugh mannity is the wrong gender.

What kind of name are you looking for? As you can see, we're endlessly creative.

Thanks be to the power of parental Tolkien fans, I'm using Eowyn de Wever which is a ... well, it's certainly not a funny name. More of an earnest name. :)

But there are days I would like to be a very punnish weaver. I just can't seem to make it work.

Next time I have insomnia I will see what I can do for you. Eowyn is Old English and de Wever is probably Middle English, so we may have to do a little slight of hand to make it work.

Actually de Wever is dutch 13th cent, if memory serves. And for the former I was going to wave a license around and use the mundane name exception. If I understand the rules correctly, that should make it work ... ish.

But I am never quite certain I understand the rules.

de Wevere is also Middle English dated to 1259. Do you have proof that Eowyn is your legal name (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, etc.)? And do you live in the East? Let's take this to e-mail: elmet@eastkingdom.org Just put "Eowyn" in the subject line please.

Well ... yeah ... but ... I am a member of Hugh Mannity too! Honest! I have the passports to prove it!

I just wish they'd let me keep the one tht proved I was the opposite gender. That would have been amusing.
