First Sisterhood Pilgrimage
Aug. 6th, 2006 03:51 pmThe Cloisters are still standing after the first Sisterhood of Saint Walburga pilgrimage. More on this later, but suffice to say that we were enlightened and saintly, and we now understand the role of monkeys in Christian theology.
Edited to add:
On the role of monkeys: One of the carved doors at the Cloisters depicts monkeys, right underneath a much more conventially religious image of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. While were supposed to be listening to a lecture on the effect of the Crusades on Western religious art, we were, instead, contemplating the significance of the monkeys.
lumineaux: Who knew that monkeys played such a key role in Christianity?
oaken_glen: The monkeys backed Judas.
katnboots: Monkeys were banging Jesus?! What?
We got many ideas for things to make and do.
math5 took many pictures, including cool pictures of three reliquaries shaped like the heads of female saints, which we christened as Sister "As if", Sister "Bring it, bitch" and Sister "Wake me when you're through."
As we noted this afternoon, we were quite obviously the only group of people laughing and giggling over exhibits. The Cloisters is obviously a very serious place. For *other* people. :-) None of us escaped the bookstore unscathed (as if that was ever in doubt).
We then repaired to Alexandre & Eularia's abode, where we drank juice, schmoozed, and ate Cuban food.
There will be a return trip, when we will generously permit the menfolk to accompany us.

Date: 2006-08-07 01:16 pm (UTC)I'm still bemused by the absence of snickering (by the other people). Yeah, if you flip up a choir seat and find a large wooden face, fingers hooked in its lips, going "bLEAAAHHH", carved under the seat, and you don't laugh... then you have anger issues. ;-)
