Katherine Barr is going to be running an event on this topic.  Not surprisingly, I'm one of the people she's tapped to teach a class and/or make a presentation.

So, if you had 2 hours for free with a lawyer to ask about SCA issues, what questions would you want answered?

Something I understand, but I think a lot of people don't: what the fuck is going on with this lawsuit?

Unfortunately, I lack sufficient factual information to answer that question. And since it's in PA state court, it's quite difficult to get access to even the publicly available information without being a PA state court lawyer.

Thinking on:

"I keep hearing people say "those waivers are worth nothing in a court of law." Are they right? If so, why do we keep having to sign all that crap?"

What does it actually mean for the SCA to be a non profit corporation....

Unfortunately I will be in the mid teaching (of all things- a modern sanitation and food safety course) that day.

But if I had a wish list? Basic copyright and intellectual property rights in Not for Profit educational groups. Also what constitutes "fair use".

There will be a class on copyright issues, I think from an IP attorney. I should be receiving a PDF handout of the class afterward for distribution.

Sadly, there's a better-than-even chance for this class on IP issues to be absolute bunk, depending on the person who teaches it. Too many IP attorneys are pushing for more protection and are unwilling to admit that there exists this thing called "fair use".

I had to fight this one against at least one SCA corporate officer, since said worked for big media.

As an aside, Canadian copyright law is less lenient about fair use than copyright law in the US. Unless the attorney is also addressing Canadian copyright issues (I don't expect this is the case), any PDF I distribute about this will come with warnings about potential conflicts.

Also, if anything in it conflicts with SCA policy or doesn't gel with my past reading of US copyright law, it won't go out without some extra discussion, at the least.

Electronic media pushes this boundary even further than print. I really, really hope they get some one good.

It is less for me and more for others. These are the types of questions that I get weekly from webministers.

Then send the PDF to whoever needs it. :-)

Actually, Alysten has a good idea for a question there. Should we be using modern food sanitation and food safety in our kitchens for feast prep. What would our liability be if we had a food poisoning incident.

We absolutely should be. I think they are trying to get some one to come teach this kind of class. They asked me, but I had committed to RUM last year. I recommended some folks. Hopefully they will be able to go to the event. I will probably do this type of class for EKU in the spring when that event gets set.

Safe Food Handling is a class from Frederick Houndstein on the last draft of the class list I saw.

I'm going to be running a project management for autocrats class at the event.

I think what I'd want to know is, what is my personal legal exposure by being an officer/warranted marshal in the SCA?
