I just rejected buying a historical mystery novel ostensibly set in 15th cen. Scotland because the heroine is named Fiona.

Perfectly reasonable; if the author fails at basic research like that, you know the whole thing will be dreck. May as well be honest and call it fantasy. At least that way you can add some Sidhe as window dressing. :)
