I'll be taking a certain someone as a protegee in late February. Since she is also already an apprentice, I'm tending towards some form of non-belt regalia. I've got a couple of clever and appropriate ideas.

The issue is this: I really don't like the color yellow (which seems to be the traditional protegee-marking color). I and my protegee-to-be both use red, black and white in our arms. If I were to do something that is NEITHER a belt NOR a scarf as her protegee "marking," and it happened to be in red, how much would the Chivalry freak out?

Thoughts from the Peanut Gallery (and others)?

Red is cool :)

What were you thinking of instead? I think red is great and who cares if it freaks out the Chiv? As long as it's not a red belt or baldric, what could they say?

My dance teacher gave us all red scarves to wear because it was one of her colors and I always had it tucked around my hips, just not a closed circle.

Being as said protegee to be can read this, I am trying to save some element of surprise.

As for who cares whether it freaks out the Chiv, let's just say that I have deep emotional scarring as a result of the last time someone said those very words . . .

If it ain't a red belt or baldric go for it.

I think the days of anyone getting their knickers in a twist is behind us. If you don't draw attention to it, I don't think anyone else will.

I am with her on this one.

Besides, do you really care?

Tell your student that if they have an issue they should see you -- or me. ;)

As I said, deep emotional scarring. I've got just enough other things going wrong in my life that I'd like to avoid stress from ridiculous sources.

That was probably poorly phrased.

I am sorry.

No need to apologize.

Shouldn't be an issue, in my opinion. I say go for it!

Ian wears a red scarf around his arm as Bhakail's Commander of Fence. As far as I know he has only had a question asked once about it. That was when he went to the Outlands for a KWAR and he was mistaken for a cadet. :) Have fun with it. If it means something between the 2 of you and those who care about you, that should be good enough.

I agree with Nataliia. If it's not a red belt or baldric, I think you'll be fine.

You're stuck with my blue cadet scarf my dear. ;-)

Of course, you could have the cadet make herself a gold scarf with little embroidered drunken oak leaves all over it. :-)

so am I a peanut or an other?

Just for fun I'm going to be a pain and not agree with the others.

I thought the point of having a uniform color/token was so that others know of the relationship...it announces to others who may not know the person that they are a (knight, laurel, pelican, don, cadet, apprentice, protoge). This symbol is not for just you and her, but for others, and for the society.

That being said, two belts (one green and one yellow) would really be very fuggly, and not match anything, so i wish you luck in comming up with a nice alternative....or you just really need to fast track her peerage!

If you look, the name of my friends page is the "Peanut Gallery." Do the math. :-)

QFT

Although I'm not sure anyone's going to see it that much if you use those pasties....

Or did I spoil the surprise?

Honestly, I'm not even that sure why we feel the need to physically mark them. I suppose I understand somewhat, but if it's an established person who's known anyway, there's probably little need. Also, the efficacy of the marking comes entirely from it being recognized. If it's not a belt/baldric/scarf/green belt/yellow belt, nobody will understand it when they see it anyway, so it's almost the same as not marking her.

Adhemar (sp?) gave his protege's an lovely pewter pin of his initial "A" ... of course if you also give an "A" it might confuse people. Maybe an "M" instead? .... or another symbol that is meaningful.

Robin Gallowglass' Pel (who's name escapes me at the moment) gave him a dual color twisted cord with something or other hanging off it. (I think my memory is still in bed) Robin wears this as a belt favor.

No, I like you're first suggestion. A big, red letter "A". Who could possibly have a problem with that?

Except for the protegee, of course... good thing she doesn't get a vote.

Many have responded to the meaningful part so I will be frivolous: the pasties're hot. I recommend tassles.

I'm not surprised we had a plan like that. I remember the Shiny Coin Ass.

Brief as I sm using my phone. If the token is primarily so that others and strangers see and understand, then deviating from the standard creates confusion. If the idea is a friendship gift and token,cd what you wish. If the concern is that your choice may upset people if it is visually confusing, there is only one way to avoid that confusion. Also, bear in mind that the East is relatively forebearing, but interkingdom travel raises the issues - how likely is that?
