What American accent do you have?

Northeastern.
You're probably from somewhere near New York City, possibly north Jersey, or Connecticut or Rhode Island. If you are from New York City you may be one of the types who people never believe when you say you're from New York.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

I will be interested to see what math5 gets on this one. :-)

Now you know :)

Southern. Love it or hate it, your accent says you're probably from somewhere south of the Ohio River.

Really? I mean, c'mon. She spent time in Houston! And the South is rich in leftovers from the colonists' dialects, which is why linguists believe Olde Englishe sounds more like Southern than "King's English".

And apparently, I have the coveted Midland neutral accent. I could read news, go me.

I remember from some long-ago PBS special that there are islands off of the Carolinas where the accent hasn't changed in centuries - so that they are probably speaking Elizabethan English. I think the total population speaking with this accent numbered a little under 100 people in total. The fear at the time was that the kids on the islands were growing up to speak like the people on TV, not like their parents, so that this little snapshot of history was going to vanish.

That is scary about the TV eliminating the historical accents. Talk about a sign of the times.

And, ianraven - keep in mind that at times I have trouble getting English from math5! I am too busy focusing on the words she says to figure out where her accent is from! (D is even worse than me, but we both love you, math5, and we are working on it!) I guess I should have been more clear in the post that it was mostly tongue in cheek! :)

I remember that! That was cool little documentary, chock full of little tidbits like the TV fear, as well as colloquialisms like "That dress ain't ugly none."
