I recently watched a retrospective on Blade Runner, where Rutger Hauer stated (and Ridley Scott confirmed) that those lines were written by Hauer in his dressing room right before they shot that scene. Hauer pitched them to Scott, who liked them enough to shoot them. Hence the reference to Tannhauser, which few American writers would have come up with...
